Episode 16

Track Cyclist Mandy Marquardt

Join us on our first on-the-ride interview with Mandy Marquardt, a track cyclist, 18-time national champion, and a 2-time U.S. national record-holder in the 500-meter and team sprint.

Host David Willey and Mandy ride side-by-side on an outdoor track at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center in Trexlertown, PA.  While she warms up, they talk about her disease and how important nutrition is in managing it.  They also dive into her goals and dreams, and about the hardest and most fulfilling parts of the sport.

Mandy is the second interview we’re featuring from Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 16, Mandy learned how to deal with the demands of being an elite athlete who needs to urgently process glycogen- our bodies’ primary energy source.

She focuses primarily on three events: the sprints, the 500-meter time trial, and the keirin. The bursts of speed in these events are demanding, and sprint cyclists regularly exceed 40 miles per hour. This requires strength, tactical skills, a strong mental game, and courage.
