Episode 15

Diabetic Pro Cyclist Lakota Phippen

Hive Life host David Willey and Team Novo Nordisk athlete, Lakota Phippen, talk about the training, chasing big goals, and competing as an athlete with Type 1 diabetes.

To celebrate November’s Diabetes Awareness Month, we are featuring riders from Team Novo Nordisk (TNN), the world’s first all diabetes professional cycling team. Formed in 2012, the team’s mission is to inspire, educate, and empower those affected by diabetes.  The chronic autoimmune condition prevents the pancreas from producing insulin, a hormone that allows sugar, or glucose, to enter cells and produce energy.

Part 1 of this 2 part series, Host David Willey talks to TNN athlete, Lakota Phippen, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2016 at the relatively late age of 24.

As a kid, Lakota was a competitive runner, Nordic skier, and mountain biker. He fell in love with road cycling after watching European races on television and aspired to turn pro. Rather than dashing those hopes, his diabetes diagnosis re-ignited them. He applied to Team Novo Nordisk and began racing in 2018.

Three years later Lakota is the lone American on Novo Nordisk’s 10-man cycling Development Team. In 2019, he earned 3 top 20 UCI stage finished, and finished second overall at the Oakridge Omnium in Tennessee. Even with these big wins, Lakota says his highest accolades are helping his teammates achieve their goals as a reliable domestique.

If you’ve ever bonked during a long run or ride, you know that fueling properly can be hard. You’ll come away from this interview with a new appreciation for what athletes with Type 1 Diabetes endure to train hard, chase big goals, and compete.
