Ultra Runner Clare Gallagher
Hive Gold athlete Clare Gallagher sits down with host David Willey 10 days after her win at Western States 100 to share about the race and more.
Hive Gold athlete Clare Gallagher spoke with host David Willey just 10 days after her huge win at Western States.
One of the most iconic 100 mile trail races in the U.S., Western States 100 is regarded as one of the world’s toughest tests of human endurance. It begins in Squaw Valley, California, near Lake Tahoe, and ends on a high school track in Auburn, CA. It is the world’s oldest 100 mile trail race, and is known for bringing a highly competitive field of runners.
Listen to Clare share how her confidence and intensity shifted throughout the race. She ultimately finished in women’s 1st place with an 11 minute lead on 2nd. With an official finish time of 17:23:25, Clare now holds the second-fastest female time in the race’s history.
Despite coming to ultra running relatively late, Clare has become one of the giants in her sport. After graduating from college, where she ran cross country and track, she moved to Thailand to teach English. It was there that she began trail running, which inspired her in a way that roads and tracks did not.
Besides Clare’s win at Western States, she and David also talk about her environmental activism, how climate change may be impacting endurance running as a sport and her unorthodox pre-race taper.
Honey Stinger Hive Gold athlete Kaci Lickteig also competed at Western States, finishing in women’s 3rd place. Hear how her race went here.
