Achilles NYC Runners Brooke & Mel
Join host David Willey as he goes on a run and talks with Achilles athletes Melissa Blume and Brooke Danielson as they prepare for the 49th running of the TCS New York City Marathon.
This week we’re taking a look at the 49th running of the TCS New York City Marathon. Legally blind runner Melissa Blume is one of 50,000+ runners tackling the city’s five boroughs on November 3, 2019. Along with her guide, and close friend, Brooke Danielson, the duo is running the race for Achilles International, an organization that pairs athletes with disabilities with guides who accompany them.
To get a sense for what this partnership is like, David Willey went for a run with Melissa and Brooke around Midtown Manhattan and Central Park. You’ll hear right away how Brooke goes about keeping Mel safe – although that’s not all she does. You’ll come away with an appreciation for how the combination of grit, fearlessness, and friendship can make difficult things not only possible, but worth doing in the first place.
Also, Christine Burke of New York Road Runners, the group that organizes the marathon every year gives an insider view of what makes New York so special and how much it’s changed over five decades.
