Episode 9

Axeon Cycling Axel Merckx

Son of cycling legend Eddy Merckx, Axel Merckx talks with host David Willey about his own professional cycling career, owning and directing cycling team Hagens Berman Axeon, and every day life.

Axel Merckx has been quite successful in his own right as a cyclist and today is the Owner and Director of Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling Team.

Starting his competitive cycling career relatively late, Axel rode in 8 Tour de France races, taking home Olympic bronze medals in 2004 and in 2001. He won a stage of the Giro d’Italia in 2000, and was the Belgian national road champion that same year.

He grew up riding with his dad, and describes those rides as “sufferfests” and shares what he learned from them. Now a dad himself, Axel talks to host David Willey about his wife, Jodi, who is a triathlete, and their two daughters who have lured him into other sports. He discusses how he rides these days, as well as what he does when his buddies try to out sprint him from time to time.

He also shares what makes a great cyclist, his proudest achievement as a pro (it’s not the Olympic medal), and his darkest moment on the bike. Axel also touches on an issue front and center for a lot of riders: safety. You’ll hear how he handles the increasingly frequent and sometimes hostile encounters with cars.

Even if you’re not a cyclist, this conversation will give you some insight on building an inspiring and maybe, in your own small way, legendary athletic life for yourself.
