David Willey, the host of “Hive Life,” is the former editor-in-chief of Runner’s World and editorial director of Bicycling and Running Times. In 2016, he helped launch two podcasts: “The Runner’s World Show,” a weekly mix of news, interviews and field segments, and “Human Race,” a biweekly show focused on a single deeply reported story each episode. As the host of “The Runner’s World Show,” Willey conducted in-depth interviews with a range of guests, including Shalane Flanagan, Dean Karnazes, and Amelia Boone, and was the subject of the popular “Moonshot” series, in which he attempted, after a decade of futility, to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Willey also worked as the on-course reporter for the televised broadcast of the New York City Marathon, interviewing—while running—dozens of marathoners with compelling personal stories.
A lifelong athlete, Willey has done nine marathons, and many half-marathons and triathlons. He played Division III football at Williams College and on a Michigan state-champion team in high school. A devout Red Sox fan, he once hit the Green Monster at Fenway Park.
